Message Ok so I'm not really a fan of automatics- this is the first automatic I ever messed with: I have a 1990 automatic N/A that I converted to auto TT tranny.

When shifting into 3rd it feels like it locks the torque converter immediately then lets go about a second after the shift (with the accelerator in the same position) then locks again when I ease up on the throttle. It almost feels like it shifts into 4th then back to 3rd then back to 4th again but I don't think that's what is happening because it acts the same with O/D off AND in 4th gear the tach reads much lower than when I first shift into 3rd.

It does this no matter what temperature it is.

It shifts correctly when I floor it (anything over ~75%)

The motor is N/A and the differential is stock 4.08, the speed sensor is also N/A, The TCM is N/A, I tried the TT TCM but it waited too long to shift through the gears (my guess is the taller diff. gearing) and it still had the same 3rd gear lock/unlock issue.

Things I already checked:
TPS adjustment
Tranny fluid level (with engine on and shifted through all gears of course)
No check engine codes
No TCM codes
TT TCM swapped in/out

It is just annoying to me, my guess is the lock point for 3rd is jacked up since the N/A differential gives the engine less load at a certain speed. I would much rather keep this tranny and live with the problem instead of having the N/A tranny which is prone to fail. I would be more willing to trade someone their TT rear end for my N/A if it fixes the shift issue.

*disclaimer*: all that I say may be true or I may be completely wrong and I accept that.... please, it is your duty as another person on the internet to in-politely tell me how wrong I am :)
